Carbon Steel round bar is a type of steel bar that is made from carbon and iron, with a low to medium carbon content. The carbon content of the steel determines its strength, hardness, and other mechanical properties.

Round bars are long, cylindrical bars with a circular cross-section. Plain carbon round bars are commonly used in a variety of industries, including construction, automotive, and manufacturing. They are often used for applications that require moderate strength, durability, and wear resistance, such as machine parts, fasteners, and tools.

Carbon round bars come in various grades, depending on the specific carbon content and other elements added to the steel. Some common grades include 1018, 1045, and 1117. These grades have different properties, such as different levels of hardness and machinability, and are chosen based on the specific needs of the application.

Carbon steel round bars can be further categorized into cold-finished and hot-rolled bars. Cold-finished bars are processed at room temperature, resulting in a smooth, polished surface finish and improved dimensional accuracy. Hot-rolled bars are processed at high temperatures, resulting in a rough surface finish and less precise dimensional accuracy.

In summary, carbon steel round bar is a type of steel bar made from carbon and iron, with a circular cross-section. It is commonly used in various industries and for applications that require moderate strength, durability, and wear resistance. It comes in various grades and can be categorized as either cold-finished or hot-rolled.

Types of Carbon Steel Round Bars:

Low-carbon steel: It is the most widely used type of steel round bar. It has about 0.25 wt.% of carbon content which is very low. These round bars grades cannot be hardened using heat. Instead, cold work is used. They are also soft with low strength compared to other metals, however, they possess high-ductility.

This quality makes them an ideal investment for low-cost machining and welding. The low-carbon steels can also contain nickel, copper, vanadium, and molybdenum, which increase their strength.

Medium-carbon steel: The carbon content in these round bar stock is between 0.25 – 0.60 wt.%. It also contains a manganese content of 0.60 – 1.65 wt.%. Using heat, the mechanical properties in these carbon round bars improve, which is followed by quenching and tempering, giving them martensitic microstructure. As a result, hardened medium-carbon steel gains more strength. However, they have low ductility and toughness.

High-carbon steel: It contains carbon content between 0.60– 1.25 wt.%. If you want a round bar stock with high hardness and toughness, these steels make the best option. However, this steel has low elasticity but despite that these round bars have a high resistance to wearing because they are hardened and tempered.
